One of the many benefits of being situated in the North Carolina mountains is that we share our property with an abundance of furry friends. We’ve grown so accustomed to seeing our neighborhood deer, turkeys, and even bear we forget that not everyone spends their day to day so close to wildlife and nature. So, we want to take the time to introduce our guests to some of our favorite neighbors.
The end of the season has welcomed the emergence of a new buck around the property. Female deer, or doe, and their babies are regularly seen around Westglow, but their male counterparts are more scarce. Last fall two large bucks roamed near and on Westglow’s property and the new addition seems as solitary as his counterparts. Oftentimes, doe can be seen grazing and traveling in groups, but the bucks in the area graze and wander Westglow’s acres alone.
Turkeys love to explore Westglow’s grounds, especially the areas around the Life Enrichment Center. Staff members at the Life Enrichment Center have a few feeders placed in nearby wooded areas to help feed the neighborhood chipmunks and birds, and turkey enjoy passing through to eat seeds that have fallen to the ground. They’ll happily tolerate a passerby as long as he maintains an appropriate distance. Otherwise, they will quickly run away until it’s safe to return!
Black bear inhabit the Pisgah National Forest that borders Westglow’s property. It is not uncommon for us to hear stories of bear tracks and sightings from Blowing Rock and the surrounding areas, but this year is the first in many that we’ve had a bear include Westglow in her territory. She’s been spotted on property a handful of times and from what we can tell is very content to keep her distance. She’s beginning her preparation for hibernation and when we do see her she’s preoccupied foraging for berries, nuts, and other food. We’re happy to make a little noise to let her know there are humans around, she then quickly travels elsewhere to forage, and only returns once activity around Westglow has quieted.
We hope to see you soon! Fall and the weeks before are a fantastic time to witness wildlife in the area and are a potential extra bonus to beautiful fall hikes and outdoor activities. Click here to view our Lodge at Westglow accommodations that are nestled in the woods on Westglow’s property.
