Sommelier Earns Rowland’s Restaurant a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence

Rowland's Restaurant at Westglow Resort and Spa

Gary Brown, Sommelier and Restaurant Manager at Westglow Resort and Spa, recently earned Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence on behalf of Rowland’s Restaurant. Wine Spectator Awards go to restaurants whose wine lists are varied while remaining appropriate to the restaurant’s specific cuisine. Furthermore, the Awards are only given to restaurants whose wine lists appeal to a wide range of wine lovers.

As a certified sommelier, Brown has always strived to meet the strict standards of Wine Spectator. “When I came to Westglow, my first goal was to see Rowland’s earn the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, not for another accolade on the wall, but because the Award of Excellence is an international standard that is easily recognized,” said Brown.

Brown’s standards have established strong relationships with Relais & Chateaux sponsored wines including selections from Dom Perignon, Pommery, Numanthia, and Il Borro, to name just a few. In keeping with Relais & Chateaux’s strong commitment to a sense of place, Rowland’s also offers wines from Jones Von Drehle Vineyards in the Yadkin Valley. Brown noted, “It is very important to me to have selections on the list that can be enjoyed by all. From first time wine drinkers to the aficionado, I have handpicked all the wines on the list with a specific guest in mind.”

All staff members at Westglow and Rowland’s Restaurant are humbled by the recognition and will continue to support Brown in maintaining a wine program that is inspiring, intriguing, and, most importantly, inviting.

New Summer Menu at Rowland’s Restaurant

Rowland's Restaurant at Westglow Resort and Spa

Warmer months mean the introduction of a new menu at Rowland’s Restaurant at Westglow Resort and Spa. This year the spring menu introduction is more unique and exciting than ever, because Westglow has proudly welcomed new Executive Chef Micheal Armes.

The kitchen at Westglow has always maintained a passionate commitment to the traditions of Appalachian cuisine while using an array of local ingredients. Chef Armes has brought an inspired twist to that commitment, which is sure to please both our treasured regulars and welcome new guests.

“As a chef, I am committed to providing guests at Rowland’s the best that our region has to offer through both innovation and tradition, while participating in the sustainable practices that are currently redefining America’s culinary landscape,” said Armes. Several of the dishes on our new menu reflect his unique philosophy.

Bonnie’s Heirloom Tomato Salad has been a crowd pleaser at Rowland’s for many seasons, to the point of becoming a staple item. Chef Armes and all of our restaurant staff see the dish as a perfect representation of what Appalachian cuisine has to offer customers. The heirloom tomatoes are lovingly handpicked by our owner Bonnie Schaefer from our local Farmer’s Market, in an effort to bring only the best produce from the farm to the Rowland’s table.

One of our favorite entrees on the new menu, the Half Rack Spring Lamb, is an excellent example of the region’s heritage cuisine and new innovation. The lamb comes from a local farm, while the combination of Sea Island Red Peas, Ramps, Bacon, Mint, and Jus adds a creative spin to an otherwise traditional dish.

We have eagerly awaited the release of our new menu, and hope that our customers will feel the passion, creativity, and dedication that went into the creation of Rowland’s summer atmosphere.

Rowland's Restaurant at Westglow Resort and Spa

This month, Rowland’s Restaurant is happy to invite the public to several upcoming wine events. We are proud to feature wine from Jones von Drehle and Fiddlehead Cellars vineyards in two separate dinners. Our chefs at Rowland’s have created two unique menus for the occasions and each dinner has been built to match the notes and flavors of the individual wines.

Westglow’s Restaurant Manager Gary Brown commented on the upcoming events, saying “For me the most exciting aspect of dinners like these is the shared passion for food and wine. It is always a beautiful thing to see what we do as restaurant through the eyes of our guests. Intimate settings like these allow for a free flow of thoughts, experiences, and perspectives.”

Each dinner will begin with an intimate meet and greet or a short wine tasting, which adds to the intimate setting of Rowland’s Restaurant and makes each dinner a unique experience.

Brown went on to discuss the important relationship between our menus and the wine we serve, “I think the guests can see when there is no relationship between the restaurant and the wine. It shows up, good or bad, in the menu…focusing not on the food and wine as separate entities, but on the perfection of their marriage is a key factor.”

The Drehle and Fiddlehead dinners will take place the 16th and 30th respectively. Click here for details.
