Pine Needle Roasted Mushrooms Recipe

mushrooms2

We’ve been having unseasonably warm weather for late February, but that doesn’t mean we’re quite done savoring hearty winter food. What embodies cold weather cuisine better than anything roasted with pine needles? Answer: not much.

We’ve shared our recipe for Pine Needle Roasted Mushrooms on the Westglow website. The dish is a favored accompaniment on our Salmon entrée and available nightly in Rowland’s Restaurant. Click here to view the recipe.

Engagement season is winding down and wedding planning season is in full swing! Planning a wedding is exciting, stressful, and can be a huge time commitment. Luckily, there are a plethora of options to help newly engaged couples begin their planning process and Westglow has its own set of tips we happily give out during wedding tours, consultations, and meetings.

Keep Your Preferred Date in Mind When Looking at Venues

More seasonal venues like Westglow can book quickly! It’s not uncommon for our Event Coordinator to reserve weddings well over a year in advance, as our available wedding season is shorter than venues unaffected by snow and our chilly mountain temperatures. So, it may be helpful to plan ahead and hit the ground running when booking a venue that has seasonal relevance such as the mountains, the beach, and most outdoor options.

Your Dress Should Match Your Venue (And Its Corresponding Weather)

Book your venue before dress shopping! Or, at the very least, know the exact style of venue you’re going to reserve beforehand. For instance, Westglow accommodates a wide variety of weddings from black tie events to more casual, laid back celebrations. However, there are certain dress styles that complement our property better than others. Even in the middle of July nighttime breezes can get chilly. So, a dress that may be perfect for a coastal wedding might be too light here. On the other hand, dramatic “heavier” dresses are better suited for a Westglow wedding than a hot weather elopement.

Get Creative with Your Accent Pieces

We don’t really adhere to a strict set of rules in regards to what flowers, place settings, and rentals you feature in your wedding, and wholeheartedly believe that a couple’s personality and creativity should shine through. Westglow is a large Greek-Revival mansion built in the early 1900’s, but we’ve seen brides seemlessly execute a variety of decorative styles. So, let your accents portray who you are as a couple and a bride. You’re having a casual outdoor wedding, but want crystal stemware? Go for it! Looking forward to your beach wedding, but want to include some mountain wildflowers? More power to you!

We love wedding season and hope all newly engaged couples are enjoying the first stages of their wedding planning! Click here to learn more about Westglow weddings.

The Perfect Valentine’s Day

VDayBlog

We love Valentine’s Day! Anything romantic is right up Westglow’s alley and we excel at celebrating every aspect of this special day. However, Valentine’s Day can be tricky, striking the right balance is key and no one wants to over or under-do the holiday. Our advice: focus on quality over quantity.

There’s no denying that people love romantic gestures, but there is a line between meaningful and overkill that can make or break the day. If you’re typically a fan of chocolates, stuffed animals, flowers, jewelry, champagne, and caviar all at the same time, then we invite you to dial in your focus. Looking at a few, important aspects will take the day from stereotypical to spectacular.

One unforgettable piece of jewelry and a special dinner for two is a textbook romantic, classic Valentine’s Day. For a unique night at home: try an elaborate flower arrangement, a special occasion bottle of champagne, and a favorite movie marathon. Single people out there, pamper yourself. A day at the spa, a shopping venture, or a weekend solo trip. Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love, so show yourself some of it!

Westglow is offering Valentine’s Day themed specials at Rowland’s Restaurant this weekend and the holiday itself, while our Valentine’s gift certificates will be available for purchase through the 14th.

How to Beat the Winter Blues

wellness1
We know dealing with cold temperatures, grey skies, and being stuck indoors can be rough during the winter months. Without the proper perspective, winter can be monotonous. Thankfully, we have tips for beating the cold-weather slump.

– Get Some Sun (Somehow)

We know it’s cold, but sunlight can do wonders for your emotions. Sunlight encourages the brain to release serotonin, a hormone associated with calm, focus, and an overall boosted mood. Without sun exposure serotonin levels can dip, contributing to Seasonal Affective Disorder. So, as long as it isn’t dangerously cold outside, bundle up and soak in a few minutes of sunlight every day.

– Exercise

Getting the appropriate amount of exercise can be difficult during winter. It’s dreary outside, bad weather can keep us away from the gym, and shorter days call us to stay cozy indoors. However, a lack of exercise can hinder our mental wellbeing. Physical activity releases endorphins and therefore alleviates the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress. If the weather doesn’t permit getting out of your house, invest in some yoga or interval training in the comfort of your own home!

Of course, sometimes the best way to beat the blues is to change your routine or mix it up. A quick trip to Westglow can be just the ticket for a fresh, renewed outlook on the remainder of the season.

Blowing Rock WinterFest

WinterFeast1WinterFeast2
Every year after the holidays, the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce stages a weekend of winter festivities. Known as WinterFest, we look forward to the weekend as a chance to break up the sometimes monotonous march of the winter weeks.

Our WinterFest highlight is always the annual Winter Feast. The event brings together Blowing Rock restaurants in one venue and gives us all a chance to strut our stuff. Locals and out of town guests purchase tickets for one of night’s three seatings and are treated to tastings from all of the featured restaurants. This year we offered pork posole with all of its accompaniments and the dish was a huge hit!

We’re excited to celebrate the rest of WinterFest this weekend! Click here to learn more.

Beauty Tips for the New Year

salon

We’re a few weeks into 2017 and that’s just long enough to fall into patterns that will set the stage for the remainder of the year. Hopefully we’re all sticking to our New Year’s resolutions and settled into our healthy routines. So, moving forward it’s time to focus on some of our favorite beauty trends for 2017.

– “No Makeup” Makeup

The natural look will be in style throughout 2017. Think of it as subtle backlash from the heavy contouring trends of last year. We suggest a light application of a matte pressed powder. They provide just enough coverage to hide any blemishes or imperfections, while leaving you with a clean and even appearance.

– Get Creative with Blush

While heavy contouring may be on its way out, playing with color isn’t. We suggest going a little bolder with your blush selections this year, to add a pop of dimension to your natural look.

– Red Lips Never Go Out of Style

Even with “less hassle” looks coming back into trend; we’ll never get tired of the classic red lip. Keep foundation light and eye make-up minimal, and then allow your red lip and splash of blush color to complete your look.

Westglow’s Spa carries the complete Jane Iredale mineral makeup line. Stock up on product the next time you visit our salon and move forward into 2017 fully stocked with the year’s necessary beauty products!

The Perfect Snow Day

snowy-sunrise

The High Country received a strong shot of winter weather over the weekend. Seven inches of snow in Blowing Rock truly made us appreciate the warm indoors. However, the weather also reminded us that Blowing Rock residents, ourselves included, excel at making the most of snow days. Read below for our tips on how to enjoy cold, winter days.

Balance is Key:
We encourage getting outside and enjoying the snow! Few things evoke a sense of childhood happiness like building a snowman, sledding, or even going on a short walk in a winter wonderland. However, don’t overdo it! Happiness can quickly turn into numb toes and a red nose. We suggest enjoying the great, snowy outdoors in short bursts, followed by an indoor cup of coffee or hot tea.

Avoid a Schedule:
If you can help it, don’t set a time frame for anything. We understand that many people operate on deadlines and our to-do lists are out the door, but try to take things at a leisurely pace during snow days. If you need to catch up on cleaning, put on your favorite TV show in the background and pick a snack to nibble on while you move from room to room. If you have e-mails you must answer, take care of them in between cozy cat naps.
Snow days literally force us to slow down and enjoy the little things in life. We believe that opportunity should be appreciated and cultivated.

Treat Yourself to Self-Care:
Days “stuck” indoors are the perfect opportunity to check-in with your needs. Spend the day catching up on whatever needs to be done to help you feel refreshed and balanced. We suggest at home skin and beauty treatments, catching up on rest, meditating, light exercise, or anything else that provides rejuvenation.

Indulge:
This option is one of our favorites. Think back to the joy that was a childhood snow day and try to bring part of the happiness to present day. Bake something, online shop, nap, order a bunch of your favorite delivery food. Do something you couldn’t normally do during an average, not snowed in, day.

Snow days can be a much needed reprieve, if you look at them in the correct light. Residents of the High Country quickly learn that snow days are what you make them; and they have the opportunity to be just as relaxing and rejuvenating as any summertime vacation.
