How to Beat the Winter Blues

We know dealing with cold temperatures, grey skies, and being stuck indoors can be rough during the winter months. Without the proper perspective, winter can be monotonous. Thankfully, we have tips for beating the cold-weather slump.

– Get Some Sun (Somehow)

We know it’s cold, but sunlight can do wonders for your emotions. Sunlight encourages the brain to release serotonin, a hormone associated with calm, focus, and an overall boosted mood. Without sun exposure serotonin levels can dip, contributing to Seasonal Affective Disorder. So, as long as it isn’t dangerously cold outside, bundle up and soak in a few minutes of sunlight every day.

– Exercise

Getting the appropriate amount of exercise can be difficult during winter. It’s dreary outside, bad weather can keep us away from the gym, and shorter days call us to stay cozy indoors. However, a lack of exercise can hinder our mental wellbeing. Physical activity releases endorphins and therefore alleviates the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress. If the weather doesn’t permit getting out of your house, invest in some yoga or interval training in the comfort of your own home!

Of course, sometimes the best way to beat the blues is to change your routine or mix it up. A quick trip to Westglow can be just the ticket for a fresh, renewed outlook on the remainder of the season.
