For other outdoor adventures, several prominent local outfitters provide white water rafting, canoeing, repelling, horseback riding, and trophy trout fishing. The Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts
The Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts is a 1,684-seat multi-use auditorium located on the campus of Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. The Center features orchestra and balcony level seating and a proscenium stage. The Schaefer Center is also home to the Catherine J. Smith Gallery and hosts many of An Appalachian Summer Festival concerts, visual arts performances and film.

Appalachian State University
Take a walk around the beautiful campus of Appalachian State University and its popular downtown area, King Street. Easy viewing access to “The Rock”, ASU’s football stadium, is available as well.

Blowing Rock Art and History Museum
This museum offers the work of Elliot Dangerfield and many other artist of the High Country area.

An Appalachian Summer Festival

Presented by the Appalachian State University Office of Arts & Cultural Programs, the annual arts celebration is held every July on and around the university campus, and features an eclectic, diverse mix of music, dance, theatre, visual arts and film. For nearly a decade, the festival has been named one of the “Top Twenty Events in the Southeast” by the Southeast Tourism Society.

Horn in the West
Experience an outdoor drama at one of the most beautiful outdoor theatres in North Carolina. Horn in the West offers historical entertainment to generations of its viewers about the Revolutionary war in the form of a drama.

Turchin Center for the Visual Arts

The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts fulfills Appalachian State University’s long-held mission of providing a home for world-class visual arts programming. The center is the largest facility of its kind in western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee and southwestern Virginia.

Beginning July 3rd, enjoy Westglow member Nancy Brittelle’s inspired work with metal. Inspiried by ancient sculptures and shaped by modern context, her exhibit is sure to impress all visitors.

Farms & Gardens


Apple Hill Farm
This unique farm offers the opportunity to interact with a variety of animals including Alpacas, cats, chickens, dogs, goats, horses, llamas and donkeys. Come during the apple picking season and chose your own fresh apples. An alpaca farm with a 45-year old apple orchard with footpaths, gardens and magnificent views

Watauga County Christmas Tree Association
With over 30 farms to choose from, and a choice of real or artificial trees, wreaths, or garland for wholesale or choose and cut selection, the Watauga County Christmas Tree Association has everything you need to find the perfect Christmas tree.

Daniel Boone Native Gardens
A walk through the gardens is perfect for anytime of the year. There is always something to see with every season. Along with the plant gardens there is a rock garden, a rock fishing well, a vine-covered arbor, a pond, and many grand vistas.

Canoeing & Kayaking


Experience the fun and excitement of exploring rivers with canoeing and kayaking. You will begin in calm waters and progress from there as you learn the sport from ACA (American Canoe Association) certified instructors.



Rock Dimensions – Caving
A year-round adventure!  The location of this caving tour is in Worley, TN and is safe for beginners and groups.

Fly Fishing


Trout and smallmouth fishing in the Southeast is some of the best in the country. Enjoy trips for various species that accommodate both fly fishermen and spin fishermen. All fishing is catch and release with barbless hooks.



Boone Golf Club
Spend the day on the links at Boone Golf Club, a public course designed by architect Ellis Maple, who created some of the Southeast’s finest courses. Located in the beautiful Watauga Valley of Boone, NC, the course features level to gently rolling fairways, large undulating greens, lush greenery, crisp mountain air, and breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Horseback Riding


See the beauty of the Highlands and take in a view of Grandfather Mountain from horseback as you ride along the trails and bridle paths of Celtic Unicorn Stables at the Yonahlossee Equestrian Center. Kilted staff is on hand to meet your riding needs. Lessons are also available.

Rock Climbing


Few experiences can top climbing outdoors on real rock cliffs for adventure. Learn the necessary safety skills for an outdoor environment, rock climbing terminology, climbing movements, and useful knots. Beginning and intermediate climbing available.

Whitewater Rafting


A real river adventure, whitewater rafting is a one-of-a-kind sport. Guides will lead you through some of the best whitewater in the Southeast.

Fly through the mountains over trees, creeks, and lakes on 20 different ziplines ranging in height, distance, and speed.



Appalachian Ski Mountain
Ski or snowboard down the local slopes of Appalachian Ski Mountain. The range of difficulty the slopes offer is suited for beginners or the more experienced skier or boarder.
